I have been a Professional Photographer for over 27 years mostly shooting film for a living.Up untill recently, if I wanted to get really creative and portray what I was thinking or feeling about a particular image it was very time consuming, difficult and expensive to do so, and it usually didn’t get done, but with the advent of Digital Photography and HDR, I control the full range of light and color without all of the burdensome work of Darkroom dodging, burning, masking, filters, developing, chemicals, etc. and I can see the image immediately and decide if I need to shoot another exposure without having to send out my film to an outside source for developing while waiting and hoping that I got it right. This is especially critical for Business meetings, weddings, sporting events or special events where you have to get it right the first time because there are no re-shoots.
Also, I think I’ve spent half my life in a darkroom and don’t care to spend any more of it there. I can do more, faster, have much more fun doing so and it opens up a whole new realm of possibilities and creativity. In addition, I am finding that many of my Atlanta Photography Clients are requesting more HDR effects in their Business Images.
To the purest who hate HDR as being over processed, unrealistic, ect., I say art is in the eye of the beholder. Who’s to tell me or any other Photographer/Artist what is good or not good. What you deliver is the way you see things. If I, “over process”, something, its because I wanted it that way and if someone doesn’t like it then they can go look at something else that they do like. I can promise you that for everyone that doesn’t like an image, there will be someone else who will like it. It is what it is. Van Gogh didn’t sell a painting in his lifetime except to his brother Theo who was an art dealer and bought his paintings to help him out and keep him from starving. People considered Van Gogh,”OVER PROCESSED”, I guess. I’m sure there are people who don’t like any of the artist that paint other than realistic images such as Van Gogh, Dali, Picasso. Monet, Warhol, ect.,ect., but I love having the ability to take an otherwise mundane image and turn it into something special that I saw in it or explore the possibilities of the Photography Craft. To those who love film I would have to say that they both have their place, just as Polaroid, Glass Negatives and Tin Types did and still do. By the way I also love Polaroid Manipulation some of which you can see on my website,
